The Mauerpark is a strip of land on the former East German side of the Berlin Wall. The strip was a once physical barrier and patroled fortification between the East and West. Today, the property is a public park on the western border of the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin where most of my training takes place.

I arrived at the Jahnsportpark a bit later than usual. I left early,
but I had to wait five minutes to cross the street in front of the
house where we live. With the temperature stuck for days in the high
teens, I assume more people were driving to work. I couldn’t think of
an alternative explanation for the traffic.

Mauerpark Graffiti

The south wall of the Jahnstadion is a continuously changing gallery of graffiti. When I started running my early morning hill sprints, I was amazed by the artwork and by the frequency at which it changes. Some designs last for more than a week; others are quickly sprayed over before they can be appreciated.

Winter Grays

Winters in Berlin are seldom frigid, and snow is a rare occurrence. Instead, a bone chilling cold befalls the city starting in late October. The uncomfortable chill is accompanied by pure grayness, short days, and a lack of sunlight that often lasts until April.
