Silent Nights

As the holiday approaches, I look forward to taking a break. The last seven weeks of max strength training were an adjustment. I cut back this fall on interval training and on three days of weight lifting. Instead, I added new exercises like dips and pull-ups while refraining from using the weight machines. With a new focus on core strength and lowering my heart rate, I placed my trust in the New Alpinism approach.

This weekend I returned to the Ghetto Proving Grounds (GPS) for a hike. Sprinting up Mound Mauerpark has been a good physical challenge during the last three weeks, but the sprints were quickly becoming boring and repetitive. I wanted to stretch my legs on a trail again and get some fresh air rather than breathe more spray paint fumes.

Winters in Berlin are seldom frigid, and snow is a rare occurrence. Instead, a bone chilling cold befalls the city starting in late October. The uncomfortable chill is accompanied by pure grayness, short days, and a lack of sunlight that often lasts until April.
